Early Steps Towards Uncovering the Cellular Role of Cholesterol
August 10th, 2012
Part of the complex structure of cell membranes is composed of cholesterol.
We all know cholesterol is bad for you. Okay, that’s not quite accurate. We all know “too much” cholesterol is bad for you. Okay, maybe that’s not completely true, either. But we all know “too much” low-density-lipoprotein cholesterol is bad for you. All right, given that you know that, then WHY? Why is too much LDL cholesterol bad for you? Who knows? But experiments such as those outlined in this 1982 paper can help answer that question. It describes changes in cell membranes as the percentage of cholesterol rises. To create membranes with artificially high cholesterol, the researchers first homogenized a dispersion by immersing it in an ultrasonic cleaning bath.
