Layer-by-Layer Deposition Provides Improved Drug Encapsulation
August 16th, 2012
Layer-by-layer deposition can create improved drug encapsulation.
Drug developers try all sorts of strategies to maximize the bioavailability of their drugs. One of the most important elements is the packaging of a single dose. A relatively new strategy is the layer-by-layer deposition of polyelectrolytes as an external covering for a pill. One way of making such a covering is described in a paper from researchers at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi, India. Start with calcium carbonate particles, alternate deposition of chitosan and sodium alginate, then dissolve away the calcium carbonate, leaving hollow microspheres. Of course, you need to evaluate the stability with stability chamber testing.
