Healthcare clinics can solve floor space constraints with undercounter and stackable laboratory refrigerators and laboratory freezers.  These are designed to protect costly vaccines and other pharmaceuticals from degradation that can occur when units marketed for homes or dormitories are used.

Tight Temperature Control Critical

Vaccines and other pharmaceutical products require tight temperature control in order to maintain potency.  An undercounter/stackable auto-defrost laboratory refrigerator manufactured by Nor-Lake and offered by Tovatech is factory pre-set at 39˚F and can be adjusted to temperatures from 36˚ to 46˚. The companion undercounter/stackable manual-defrost laboratory freezer is factory pre-set at -4˚F but can be adjusted from 14˚F.   Both units are offered with an optional digital thermometer alarm that sounds if temperatures range beyond the set figure.  It is comprised of an internal thermocouple connected to an external display/alarm module.

Units are equipped with locks to help control unauthorized access to contents.  Both are a compact 23-5/8 inches wide, 33-1/2 inches high and 24-7/8 inches deep.  They are designed to be either free-standing or can be built in on three sides, further contributing to saving floor space.

Institute Product Protection Procedures

Scientific laboratory refrigerators and freezers are designed to provide maximum protection for valuable contents.  Your clinic’s operations manual should clearly state how these units should be used.  For example, you should assign at least two individuals with responsibility for storing and handling the contents.  Follow the temperature recommendations provided by manufacturers of the products being stored.    For record keeping, log the temperature of the refrigerators and freezers at the beginning and end of the day.

Take immediate action if the temperature alarm sounds by having a backup plan.  This should also be in place in case of a power outage.  All staff members should be aware of these procedures.

Remember that proper storage of vaccines and other pharmaceuticals is important to maintain potency and protect the health of patients. The scientists at Tovatech are ready to help you select laboratory refrigerator and laboratory freezer sizes and models tailored to your clinic, laboratory and scientific applications.
