Precision Weighing in the Laboratory
This article on precision weighing equipment provides a clear and concise overview on their history, nature and working. Three types of balances and their working are covered:
1) One-pan electronic balance
2) Two-pan precision chain/multi-weight carrier type
3) Two-pan constant load balance type
Type 1, the one-pan electronic balance or analytical balance, is the most common these days in laboratories. The work to weigh is simply placed on the pan. This moves a load cell, which in turn activates electronics and built-in software to produce a clear, digital readout. Another advantage of digital scales is that they can be RS232-interfaced with a PC for extensive data record keeping.
