How to use a Digital Scale to Calculate Surface Weight
December 13th, 2011What’s surface weight? Well, it’s a way to measure what you are getting when buying thin products such as paper, fabrics, leather and floor tile. Otherwise stated it is a way measure the weight per unit area such as grams per square meter. While such products may look the same surface weight is not as obvious and generally heavier (or denser) per unit of area is better when comparing similar products. A digital scale such as the Kern IKT platform scale available from Tovatech is an excellent tool to determine this.
These scales are offered in 12 models with maximum weighing capacity from 3,100 to 151,000 grams and with minimum piece weights from 0.01 to 1.0 gram, which also corresponds to the readout of the model. The model selected can be based on the typical surface weights of the products being tested.
Preparing and Weighing Samples for the Digital Scale
Accurate comparisons between different samples require that the sample sizes be exactly the same. Sample cutters are useful here in preparing like sizes such as 100 cm². Once the samples are cut and identified, the weighing process can begin.
The multifunction Kern IKT platform scale has a touch screen display with function keys labeled in plain text. Its menu tree shows at a glance the function in use. In the case of calculating surface weight the menu button is touched until the paper size is displayed. Place the samples on the tared balance platform and the scale will display the weight in grams per cm2. Data can be transferred to a standard or statistics printer and a label to affix to the samples.
Other Uses for the IKT Platform Scale
In addition to surface weighing the versatile IKT platform scale is also ideal for standard weighing, piece counting, check weighing, percent determination, dispensing, recipe weighing, animal weighing and totalizing operations. An optional rechargeable battery power supply provides approximately 10 hours of service before recharging.
Commissioning and Caring for the Digital Platform Scale
Precision platform scales such as the Kern IKT should be placed on a solid level surface away from temperature extremes and protected from humidity. The balance must then be calibrated using a recommended calibration weight to compensate for gravity at its particular location. The calibration weight depends on the model of balance but an example is 50 kg. Turn the scale on and let it stand for 15 minutes. Place the weight in the center of the platform and press the calibration key. The scale will automatically correct itself if the indicated weight is different from the known calibration weight.
This exercise should be performed on a periodic basis and any time the platform scale is moved or if there is a change in the environment such as a major temperature fluctuation.
Your company’s operation manual should contain detailed instructions on the operation and care of the platform scale, and all personnel should be made aware of the importance of these functions.
