Removing Glue from Trapped Insects—Ultrasonic Cleaning Does the Job
January 27th, 2012
Insects fly in, but to remove the trapped insects from the glue an ultrasonic cleaner comes in handy.
You’ve probably seen “sticky traps,” those containers hung in fields or orchards to capture insects. Have you ever wondered what happens to those containers? Obviously, the traps are used to monitor the insects, and for some sampling, all you need to do is pull the bug out of the glue. But some of the insects are so fragile that they would just be pulled apart if they were grabbed. So researchers evaluated the ability of various citrus oil solvents to remove the bugs from the sticky surface. By putting the insect and glue in a vial and then immersing the vial in an ultrasonic cleaner they were able to speed the freeing of the insect from the glue.
