Platform Scales Measure Burn Rate for Efficient Woodstoves
February 1st, 2012
A platform scale measures the burn rate of woodstoves while their emissions are being monitored.
A fireplace can be an emotionally satisfying source of heat. It can also waste a fair amount of heat—sending it right up the chimney. Woodstoves are more efficient, but even they can be a source of significant amounts of air pollution. Modern woodstoves, however, are designed to be both thermally and environmentally efficient. With recirculation mechanisms to ensure complete combustion and internal designs to maximize heat extraction, today’s woodstoves are guilt-free home heaters. To make sure they’re working the way they should, subject them to the tests outlined in this procedure. It starts and end with a platform scale measurement to determine the burn rate, while monitoring emissions at the same time.
