KERN: Tradition and Innovation
Kern instruments set a very high standard for moisture testing. Both models provide fast and accurate results for moisture content and percent solids analysis of a wide range of products and materials. In research, manufacturing, and quality control applications it is essential to determine moisture content simply and reliably. A Kern moisture analyzer will do precisely that, providing moisture content data as a percentage of initial mass or of the residual dry mass. All models have a readout of 0.001 g or 0.01% moisture.
KERN & Sohn GmbH was established in 1844 and is the oldest manufacturer of precision balances in Europe. Through consistent growth Kern now has customers all over the world and they have enjoyed close relationships with many customers for decades.

Symbiotic Interactions: How Do They Change With Environmental Temperature?
Predicting reactions to global climate change is just about as complex a problem as you’ll ever find. Even assuming you’re able to predict the average temperature increase for each microclimate, predicting the reaction of organisms to that temperature increase is no easy task. We ran across an example of the complexity of the problem in

In the Trenches With the Nanotechnologists
I recently had an editor give me grief for not defining “nanotechnology” with sufficient precision for the introductory audience. I managed to convince her that nanotechnology is about as loosely defined a term as you’ll find in technical circles. Essentially, it applies to anything designed with features more or less around a nanometer (or ten

Taking a Step Toward Measurement Comparability
If you want to do comparative studies, you’ve got to be sure the measurements you’re making are, well, comparable. For example, if you want to compare the characteristics of different soils, or examine the evolution of soil over time, then you can’t go measuring nitrogen in one place, phosphorus in another, and dry weight in
