KERN: Tradition and Innovation

Kern moisture analyzers set a very high standard for moisture analysis. All three models provide fast and accurate answers for moisture content, percent solids and dry weight analysis of a wide range of products and materials. In research, manufacturing, and quality control applications it is essential to determine moisture content simply and reliably. A Kern moisture analyzer will do precisely that, providing moisture content data as a percentage of initial mass or of the residual dry mass. All models have a readout of 0.001 g or 0.01%.

KERN & Sohn GmbH was established in 1844 and is the oldest manufacturer of precision balances in Europe. Through consistent growth Kern now has customers all over the world and they have enjoyed close relationships with many customers for decades.

We offer our customers a wide and competitively priced range of balances, ranging from the basic to the advanced moisture balance to the heavy load industrial balances.

In the product range there is a large selection of analytical, precision, laboratory, pocket, industrial, hanging, crane and counting balances.

Mechanikus Gottlieb KERN founded his company in 1844 and manufactured the most accurate balances of its time. His business became the core of the internationally famous, southern German precision balance manufacturing industry.  Over 160 years of experience and our devotion to quality has enabled KERN to become specialists in the weighing field. The KERN brand stands for precision and reliability. KERN is DIN ISO 9001:2000 accredited and globally active.  Working with KERN is easy. The KERN commitment to satisfy customers never stops.

We have balances for percent solids, moisture determination, wastewater balance, sludge solids, water content and quality control. We also serve the general research community with HPLC, Ion Chromatography, UV/Vis Spectrophotometers, and Dissolution Testing Apparatus. A Kern Moisture Balance compares favorably with a Cem moisture analyzer, Meeco moisture analyzer or Karl Fischer.

  • Ecologically Friendly Packaging? How About Fish Guts and Potatoes?

The search for ecologically-friendly biodegradeable packaging materials has twisted down some rather unusual paths.  Sure, you’d like to come up with a replacement container for your restaurant leftovers, but have you ever thought of making packaging foam material from potato starch and fish parts?  A research team led by the Agricultural Research Service of the

  • Chemical Sludge Simulates Radioactive Waste

One of the ways to handle radioactive waste is through vitrification—kind of “glassifying” the waste. But before trying the vitrification process on real radioactive waste, the folks at the Savannah River National Laboratory verify it with “simulant” material. The simulant needs to—well—simulate the actual material.  They needed “to develop an improved understanding of the impact

  • Moisture Analyzer Confirms Chemical Properties at Nuclear Facility

We’ve talked before about the difficulties associated with cleaning up (“remediating”) old nuclear facilities.  We’ve even talked specifically about the Savannah River remediation project.  Each time we discuss these projects we’re struck by two facets: the difficulty of performing them and the serious consequences if they’re performed incorrectly.  The chemicals used need to be exactly

  • Chicken Manure Pyrolysis Creates Biofuels and Fertilizer

It’s kind of paradoxical that “chickens**t” is a term for a two-bit, inconsequential entity, because farming operations in the US produce about 18 million tons of chicken manure annually.  Which raises the question, what do you do with those mountains of manure?  Traditionally, it has been processed for inorganic fertilizer, composted for organic fertilizer, or

  • Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Hexaoxatricosane

To understand a chemical compound, you’d want to know the basic chemical and physical properties, such as molecular mass, density, and vapor pressure.  But if you really want to know about it, you’ll study its toxic effects on fish, its irritating effects on skin, and its debilitating effects on reproduction.  An example is the IUCLID
