The process of ultrasonic cleaning includes four elements; time, temperature, detergent, and ultrasonic sound waves.  By adjusting these elements your washer can perfectly adapt to your individual cleaning needs.  Simple knobs on the face of the cleaner set the time and temperature of the unit.  Cleaning time can be set to run continuously or between 5 and 30 minutes.  Each unit is equipped with a built-in 12 hour safety shut-off feature.  The tempurature of your unit can be set from 30C to 80 C.

Our redesigned ultrasonic cleaners are durable (the bath has a two year warranty), easy to handle, and easy to empty and fill. The degas feature is allows you to get started quickly and our timers offer added convenience.

Typical applications are for cleaning of jewellery, lenses and other optical parts, coins, watches, dental and surgical instruments, fountain pens, industrial parts and electronic equipment. Ultrasonic cleaners are often found in jewelry or watchmakers workshops, or in cellular phone repair shops.

Cavitation occurs throughout the cleaning liquid when sufficient energy is supplied, and it is for this reason that ultrasonics can effectively clean holes and small crevices. It also makes chemical reactions faster and speeds the rate at which surface films are dissolved.

Cavitation only occurs when the local pressure in the liquid is reduced to a value less than its vapor pressure. The minimum amount of power necessary to initiate cavitation is referred to as the threshold of cavitation. Only ultrasonic energy above the threshold value contributes to the formation of cavitation bubbles and to ultrasonic cleaning.

In a typical unit, the part to be cleaned is placed in the bath containing a fluid (an aqueous or organic solvent, depending on the application). An ultrasound generating transducer is built into the chamber at the bottom of the bath, or less often is lowered into the fluid. The main of cleaning action is by cavitation which the energy released from the creation and collapse of microscopic bubbles, which impinge the contaminated surface and break up and lift off dirt.

Ultrasonic Cleaners: Three Modes
The Elmasonic S Ultrasonic cleaners operates in 3 modes: Sweep, Degas, and Normal.  Cleaning is optimized in Sweep mode.  The Sweep function guarantees a homogeneous sound field distribution by continuously shifting the sound field maxima.  Freshly mixed cleaning liquid does not clean efficiently until fully degassed, as dissolved gas suppresses cavitation.  The Degas function accelerates the degassing process in the cleaning liquid.  In Normal mode the Elmasonic S mixes, disperses, emulsifies, and dissolves samples.  3-Mode operation in benchtop units is unique to Elma.

Ultrasonic Cleaners with Convenient Accessories
13 different sizes from 0.5 liter to 90 liter are available.  Accessories include baskets with plastic coated handles, clamps for Erlenmeyer flasks, acid-proof tanks, and holders for 1 liter HPLC solvent flasks (for HPLC solvent degassing).  Elma’s noise reducing cover can be flipped over and used as a tray and drip-off basin.  The collected cleaning liquid can be conveniently emptied back into the ultrasonic cleaners tank.

Choosing a cleaning process and cleaning solutions.
Before a cleaning system is purchased, you should take the following steps. The parts to be cleaned should be analysed to determine: 1)The materials of construction, configuration, and quantity of the parts to be cleaned are identified. 2)The soils or contamination which needs to be removed are identified and analyzed. 3)The cleaning approach is determined via experimentation and trial and error. Only with these actions accomplished can an appropriate ultrasonic cleaning system, designed for the cleaning process and the cleaning solution, be provided.
