ULTRASONIC CLEANING utilizes high-frequency sound waves (above the upper range of human hearing) to facilitate removal of contaminants from a variety of substrates (like metals, plastics, glass, rubber and ceramics) immersed in aqueous or organic media. Contaminants can be dust, dirt, oil, pigments, grease, polishing compounds, flux agents, fingerprints, soot wax and mold release agents, just to name a few. Ultrasonic agitation can be used with a variety of cleaning agents: detailed information about these agents is available from Tovatech.

Typical applications found in the metals industry are removing chips, buffing or polishing agents and cutting oils from machining operations, or cleaning greases and sludge from automotive and aircraft components.

Ultrasonic cleaning is powerful enough to remove tough contaminants but not strong enough to damage the substrate. It provides penetration and cleaning in the smallest crevices and between tightly spaced parts in an ultrasonic bath.

The use of ultrasonic cleaning has become popular recently because of the restrictions on the use of chlorofluorocarbons. These restrictions are causing many manufacturers to switch to immersion cleaning technologies. The use of ultrasonics enables the cleaning of complicated parts with effectiveness as good as that achieved by vapor degreasing.

High Performance Ultrasonic Cleaning Equipment
Ultrasound cleans wherever the cleaning liquid can go.  Nearly perfect ultrasonic cleaning is achieved with Elma’s high-performance 37 kHz transducer system. It is particularly suitable for the cleaning of laboratory instruments made of glass, plastic, or metal.  Elmasonic S units meet the demands of round-the-clock use in the toughest environments. The use of highest grade materials and reliable technology prolong the service life of the units.

Family of Elma Ultrasonic Equipment

Precision and Critical Cleaning
Elmasonic S equipment operates in 3 modes: Sweep, Degas, and Normal.  Cleaning is optimized in Sweep mode.  The Sweep function guarantees a homogeneous sound field distribution by continuously shifting the sound field maxima.  Freshly mixed solution does not clean efficiently until fully degassed, as dissolved gas suppresses cavitation.  The Degas function accelerates the degassing process in the cleaning solution.  In Normal mode the Elmasonic S mixes, disperses, emulsifies, and dissolves samples.  3-Mode operation in a benchtop system is unique to Elma.

Flexible Control Features
The Elmasonic industrial ultrasonic cleaners utilize digital Sweep function developed in the Elma acoustic engineering laboratories. The microprocessor-controlled generator sends out a signal and self-adjusts to the actual fill and load in the bath.

All Elmasonic units have ceramic heating elements to assist the cleaning process. A simple turning knob allows temperature settings between 30° and 80°C. The heating elements are absolutely dry-run proof. The cleaning period can be set from 5 to 30 minutes, or run continuously. The units have an automatic safety shut-off after 12 hours.

Convenient Accessories
Elmasonic bench top units are available in 13 different sizes from 0.5 liter to 90 liter.  Of course for industrial style equipment please contact Tovatech directly at 973 913 9734. Practical Elmasonic S accessories include baskets with plastic coated handles, clamps for Erlenmeyer flasks, acid-proof tanks, and holders for 1 liter HPLC solvent flasks (for HPLC solvent degassing).  Elma’s noise-reducing cover can be flipped over and used as a tray and drip-off basin.  The collected liquid can be conveniently emptied back into the ultrasonic cleaning tank.

Why you should choose an ultrasonic cleaning system
The recognized advantages of ultrasonic cleaning are:

  • Precision..... Because ultrasonics penetrates into dead end holes, crevices and cavities, any place the liquid can travel. In many cases ultrasonic cleaning is the only way to meet specifications, as in the cleaning of precision parts or assemblies.
  • Speed.....Ultrasonic cleaning is faster than conventional cleaning methods. Entire assemblies can be cleaned without taking them apart. This usually results in labor saving advantages that make ultrasonics the most economical way of cleaning.
  • Consistency.....Unlike manual cleaning, with ultrasonics you get cleaning consistency, whether pieces to be cleaned are large or small, simple or complex, handled singly, in batches, or in an automated line.

Cavitation: The working mechanism of Ultrasonic Cleaning

Cavitation is the formation and implosion of tiny cavities or vacuum bubbles in the liquid. The transducer’s movement produces pressure waves within the liquid in the cleaning tank. The cleaning liquid is compressed during the high pressure phase of the wave cycle, and pulled apart during the low pressure phase. As the pressure in the liquid is reduced during the low pressure phase, cavities grow from a tiny seed to a maximum critical diameter. During the high pressure phase the cavitation bubbles compress and implode. The energy is very powerful but safe for parts because it is localized at microscopic scale.
