Choose the Kern model that fits your need:

  • MLB for routine quality control
  • MLS for step-by-step help, internal memory for 99 processes with GLP compliance
  • MRS for ultimate software control

Rapid, Accurate, Simple to Use

Kern moisture analyzers set a very high standard for moisture analysis. All three models provide fast and accurate answers for moisture content, percent solids and dry weight analysis of a wide range of products and materials. In research, manufacturing, and quality control applications it is essential to determine moisture content simply and reliably. A Kern moisture analyzer will do precisely that, providing moisture content data as a percentage of initial mass or of the residual dry mass. All models have a readout of 0.001 g or 0.01%.

Operating a Kern moisture balance is easy as 1-2-3:

  • place sample in drying chamber
  • enter test parameters on keypad
  • press key to start analysis

Controlled Drying Process

Most Kern models use halogen quartz glass heaters to provide constant even drying of the sample at a temperature pre-selected by the operator. The newest Kern model, MLS 50-3IR160, utilizes the latest infrared heating technology to afford consistent and accurate results. Infrared heating is somewhat slower than halogen heating, but avoids the need to replace halogen bulbs and also prevents overshooting the set temperature. The advanced software closely monitors the temperature in the moisture analyzer drying chamber and maintains it to within 1ºC of the chosen setting.

  • MLB 50-3 heats from 50-160ºC in 1ºC stages.
  • MLS Models offer heating profiles selected from 4 modes: preheating, standard drying, gradual drying, stage drying.
    • MLS 50-3HA160 and MLS 50-3IR160 heat from 50-160ºC
    • MLS 50-3HA250 heats from 50-250ºC
  • MRS 120-3 heats from 30-230 ºC with preheating, standard or gradual drying.

As the analysis progresses the moisture balance displays the current status, keeping the operator updated on each stage of the process.  The analysis automatically terminates either when drying is complete and the dry weight is stable, or after a fixed time specified by the operator.

Standard Temperature ProfileStandard drying
Standard drying is the most commonly used drying process. This type of heating is suitable for most substances.

Ramp and Fast Drying ProfileSoft drying
Soft drying is intended for substances that do not tolerate heating by means of halogen heating lamps. There are also substances that form a film when heated quickly; this film influences the evaporation process of the enclosed moisture. For substances of this kind soft heating is also suitable.

Fast drying
Fast heating can be used for samples with a moisture content of between 5% and 15%. The temperature is increased very quickly and briefly exceeds the set drying temperature. Then the temperature is regulated down to the set temperature. The sample must contain sufficient moisture.

Water determination via step dryingStep drying
Step drying can be used for substances that show specific behavior during drying. The individual increments regarding duration or temperature increase can be freely selected. The samples should contain at least 15% moisture.

Print or Save Results on PC

The final result is shown on the moisture balance digital display and remains until it is replaced by a new measurement.  At the end of the moisture weighing all relevant data concerning initial mass, residual mass, test parameters and results can be printed out via an RS-232 interface.  When the moisture analyzer is connected to a PC the data acquisition software allows the operator to produce a graph plotting results against time, providing valuable information on speed of drying and confirmation of dry weight stability.  Results of individual tests can be stored in the computer memory for subsequent comparison.

Models MLS and MRS meet GLP/ISO record keeping requirements.

Convenient Calibration

The weight calibration program enables quick setting of the moisture analyzer's accuracy. External calibration weights are required, and are available as optional accessories. A temperature calibration set, consisting of a measurement sensor and display device, is also available as an option.
