How the FlowCal 5000 works

Measurement sequence

  1. Solvent enters the inlet; first optical sensor starts the timer.
  2. Meniscus reaches the second sensor; timer stops, valve opens, and tube drains.
  3. Reading appears on the 4-digit LCD and can output to 6 digits over RS232 to PC or printer.
  4. Cycle repeats automatically for fast averaging.

Flow meter recalibration

Annual recalibration is highly recommended. The flow meter is shipped with a traceable calibration certificate valid for one year. Even if your flow meter is still operating within specifications at the end of 1 year, it will be cleaned and adjusted for improved accuracy.

Recalibration must include a calibration point at 1 mL/min. You can request any number of additional calibration points between 0.05 - 25 mL/min. Standard 3-point recalibration is at 0.5, 1, and 2 mL/min.

Typical turnaround: about 2 weeks. Rush service is usually possible for an additional fee.

  2. Ship your flow meter to our Plano, TX facility.
  3. Flow meter is cleaned, adjusted, and calibrated.
  4. Flow meter and new calibration certificate are shipped back to you.

How accurate and precise is the FlowCal 5000?

It is accurate to ±1% of reading over the linear range of 0.05-25 mL/min, with a standard deviation under ±0.5%.

What is the flow meter resolution?

The flow meter displays 4 digits (e.g. 0.050 mL/min), but when using an RS232 interface, the readings are output to 4 decimal places (e.g. 0.0500 mL/min).

How often should I recalibrate?

Annually. Flow meters are shipped with traceable certificates valid for 1 year. Call to schedule and get shipping instructions.

Can it run inline under pressure?

No, the flow meter is open to atmospheric pressure and cannot be used inline under pressure. It is connected to your HPLC system at the end of the line where the solvent exits at atmospheric pressure.

Is it compatible with my HPLC?

Yes, it is compatible with any HPLC system operating with a standard HPLC solvent at a flow rate between 0.05 and 25 mL/min. If you have unusual solvents, call so we can confirm.

How do I connect the flow meter to my HPLC system?

The flow inlet is a 1/16 inch diameter PEEK tube and can be connected with a standard fitting for HPLC tubing. Connecting the flow meter is easy.

What is the recalibration turnaround?

Typically about 2 weeks. Rush service is usually possible for a fee; call to arrange.

Does recalibration include as-found data?

Recalibration includes as-found data only at 1 mL/min. As-found data at other flow rates can be provided at additional cost, but it must be included on your recalibration purchase order.

Do I need the thermal printer?

It is optional. If you need hardcopy audit trails or field printing, we recommend it.
